The Cut of a Diamond

The cut of a diamond refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond. The better cut a diamond, the more brilliant. My favorite is Princess cut for an Engagement Ring because it makes the diamond look bigger than it really is.

Based on scientific formulas, a well-cut diamond will internally reflect light from one mirror-like facet to another and disperse and reflect it through the top of the stone. This results in a display of brilliance and fire, thereby giving well-cut diamonds higher worth than deep or shallow-cut
diamonds. Diamonds that are cut too deep or too shallow lose light that spills through the side or bottom. As a result, poorly cut stones will be less brilliant and beautiful – and certainly less valuable.

Cut also refers to shape—round, square, pear, or heart for example. Since a round diamond is symmetrical and capable of reflecting nearly all the light that enters, it is the most brilliant of all diamond shapes and follows specific proportional guidelines. Ask a jeweler to find out more about
these guidelines.

Non-round shapes, also known as “fancy shapes,” will have their own guidelines to be considered well-cut.

A well cut or faceted diamond, regardless of its shape, scintillates with fire and light – offering the greatest brilliance and value.

While nature determines a diamond's clarity, carat weight and color, the hand of a master craftsman is necessary to release its fire, sparkle and beauty. When a diamond is cut to good proportions, light will reflect from one mirror-like facet to another and disperse through the top of the stone,
resulting in a display of brilliance and fire.
