How to Choose an Engagement Ring

A diamond engagement ring is one of the most enchanting, magical surprises that a couple can share. It is a time that both people will remember forever.

It does, however, take a bit of planning. Especially if you want the proposal to remain a surprise.

To accomplish the perfect moment, you will (of course) need to know her ring size. There are some very easy solutions to finding her ring size while still keeping your sweet secret. Be certain to remember that her ring size will vary from finger to finger, so these tips should be seen only as directional tools and not etched in stone.

If she regularly leaves her rings about, somewhere that you can secretly reach them and borrow them for a moment, use the opportunity to make an impression of one. Be sure that it is for the correct finger, then press it into a bar of soap, a piece of clay or - if you’re in a bind - even a piece of bread can create a reliable impression for measurement.

If you have the materials handy, and you prefer a different method, you can trace the inside of the ring with a pen and a piece of paper. The jeweler can use this tracing to determine what her actual ring size is.

A very simple method that is very useful if you intend to head to the jeweler that day, is to take one of her rings and push it down as far as it will go on one of your own fingers (it doesn’t have to be all the way…don’t get it stuck, just make sure it’s a snug fit). Using a pen, mark the spot where the lowest edge of the ring has reached on your finger. Try to use a pen that won’t smudge or rub off - remember, you want this to be accurate. Show this marking to your jeweler and he or she will be able to take the
measurement for you.

If you are in the mood for detective work, one of her friends can be very helpful. It is not altogether uncommon for women friends to ask things such as ring sizes simply as a matter of curiosity. The most important part of this method is to be sure that the friend can keep a secret!

Should it be possible, and not arouse any suspicion, take one of her rings to the jeweler. As long as the ring you choose is a good fit, then this can be the most accurate choice.

When choosing the ring itself, there are several things to keep in mind. Her taste being among the most important.

To get to know her taste, there are several great techniques:

  • Pay attention when she admires someone else’s ring

  • Notice which advertisements or photographs of rings she admires.

  • Ask her friends and family what she likes

  • Take time to notice the other jewelry she wears—whether she prefers a simple design or a more intricate piece

  • Note metal choice as well—white gold, yellow gold or platinum.

  • Browse with her at a dependable jeweler

  • Learn about the 4Cs of diamond choice so that you can make an educated
    purchase

  • Surprise her with the engagement ring that goes beyond all her expectations
