BUYING AN ENGAGEMENT RING
FROM OFFLINE/ONLINE STORES (Part 1 of 2)
The most important step in
buying an engagement ring is to select a good jeweler. Whether you buy on
the Internet or from a local store, you need to be careful.
It is quite tough and tiresome to find a good
local jeweler. Most of them do not advertise too much since their
clientele is based more on referrals. But the local jewelers spend the
time to educate you. Once you have a good idea of what's out there, talk
to wholesalers and definitely visit some of the Internet jewelers.
Buying a diamond engagement ring on the Internet
could be risky. Internet scams and credit card fraud can make any
intelligent consumer concerned. Even if you decide not to buy your jewelry
online and opt for a traditional jewelry store, the Internet can still be
a valuable resource. You can essentially do all your homework - determine
the style, quality and price you are willing to pay - before you even
enter the store.
Offline Buying
A good way to find a
local jeweler is to try to submit a request at
www.FindMyJeweler.com.
After you submit your request (i.e. a description of the diamond you seek,
plus your name and a phone number), this free service matches you up with
an independent diamond consultant who then helps you select a jeweler in
your area. This site gives very exhaustive ratings for jewelers throughout
the U.S.
When you
visit a local jeweler, remember the following points:
•
Gather information about the
reputation of the store
-
Is
the shop offering gemological certificate?
-
Is
the shop a member of a trade association?
-
Will
the shop present a detailed receipt with your purchase?
-
Exactly which warranties
and guarantees does the shop offer?
-
Know the approximate price
range of different diamonds
-
Ask the right questions
-
Examine the diamond
yourself
-
Immediately after making the purchase,
have the diamond checked by an unbiased third party.
-
Remember that jewelers are busiest in the run-up to Christmas and before
Valentine's Day. August is traditionally their slowest month, so it may be
the best time to ask for a better deal.
